In Leo Manovich’s research he defines deep remixability as, “What gets remixed today is not only content from different media but also their fundamental techniques, working methods, and ways of representation and expression.” For my hybrid video I chose to remix news clips and timelapses to create a narrative. The theme I chose to revolve my narrative around was climate change. I chose this theme as climate change is become prevalent as many leaders in the world are not taking action to put it as a priority. I chose glaciers as my main subject because of how commonly they are referenced in topics related to global warming. Being so commonly referenced it’s almost like they become a common phrase and people forget the severity of the topic, which is what I wanted to highlight.
My video is composed of several different clips of different glaciers melting or sea levels rising. Along with news clips from press conferences held by Donald Trump. The footage of Trump is carefully interwoven with melting glaciers to highlight the denial and misinformation spread by world leaders. The video length is 2:10:0, this time was specifically chosen as according to some scientists this was when the world is going to end. At the end of the video I used sounds of wind howling and ended it in darkness. The wind was used to make the audience feel as if they were there seeing the glaciers, while the darkness at the end was brought in for the viewer to reflect at the end.
To make the video I used both Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premier. I used Premier to cut various clips of footage using the razor blade tool. However, while exporting each individual segment I noticed that there existed two anchors to indicate the start and end point of the video and they can be used to save multiple segments. I used After Effects to create glitch and stick video segments together. I created the glitch effect by creating a solid later associated with a video clip and applying a fractal noise effect to it. After, pre-composing this later I applied the distortion map to complete the glitch. This allowed me to layer a video clip underneath and have it revealed through the holes of the glitch. I also used keyframes to change the opacity of different clips to create smooth transition and overlap clips. By doing so, I was able to overlap a speech by Trump with videos of glaciers melting to contrast his words with the truth. At the end of the video I used the timeframe option to fast forward the clip to indicate to the audience the severity of the problem.
